Tier-on-tier in a period lounge
A street-facing lounge that needed privacy at seated height without losing the daylight that made the room worth sitting in.
The window
The window looks straight onto a pavement, so the room was effectively unusable in the evening without something at the glass. A single run of full-height panels would have solved the privacy but darkened the whole room every time it was closed.
What we did
Tier-on-tier panels split at the transom line. The lower tier closes for privacy while the upper tier stays wide open, so the room keeps its light from mid-height upward, which is where the useful daylight comes from anyway. A soft grey-white finish keeps the panels reading as joinery rather than as a white box against the existing woodwork.
